Free QR code generator with tracking: a how-to guide

Free QR code generator with scan tracking: PNG and SVG with no sign-up, dynamic QR codes that count scans and change their link after printing.

How to make a free QR code

To make a free QR code, paste your link into MJX QR Generator at mjxtechnologies.com/qrgen and download the code as PNG or SVG — there is no sign-up. To count scans or change the link after printing, verify your email with a 6-digit code and make it a tracked QR, which is also free, up to 10 per email.

A QR code is only a link a phone camera can read. Shops put one on the counter for a WhatsApp chat or reviews, coaching centres put one on admission flyers, restaurants put one on the table for the menu. In each case the code is printed once and expected to keep working.

How to make a QR code with MJX QR Generator, step by step

For print, give the printer the SVG, keep the white border around the code, and use a dark code on a light background, which phones read most easily.

  1. Open MJX QR Generator at mjxtechnologies.com/qrgen.
  2. Paste your link. Any http or https address works: a WhatsApp chat link, a review link, a form, a website or a profile. The QR appears as you type.
  3. Download it as PNG if it will be used on screens or sent on WhatsApp.
  4. Download it as SVG if it is going to a printer. An SVG stays sharp at any size, on a visiting card and on a hoarding.
  5. Scan a test print with your own phone before printing many copies.

Which link to put in your QR code

A QR code is only as useful as the link inside it, so decide what the person scanning should land on. A shop counter usually wants a WhatsApp chat link that opens a chat with the shop’s number, or the link to its reviews page. An admission flyer wants the enquiry form. A restaurant table wants the menu.

Use the shortest page that does the job. Somebody scanning a code on a poster is standing up, often outdoors, and will give the page a few seconds; a form or a chat that opens straight away does better than a home page they have to search.

If you are not sure the link is final — the menu might move, the offer might end — make the code a tracked QR from the start. You can change a tracked QR’s link later; you cannot change a plain one.

What is the difference between a plain QR and a dynamic QR code?

A plain QR holds your link itself. It never passes through MJX, which is why it needs no account and keeps working as long as your link does. It also means a plain QR cannot be counted or changed: what is printed is what it opens.

A tracked QR — what is often called a dynamic QR code — holds a short MJX link instead. Each scan goes through that link, is counted, and then opens your link. Because the printed code points at the MJX link and not at your address, you can change where it goes at any time.

Choose plain when the link will not change and you do not need numbers, such as your website on a visiting card. Choose tracked when you are printing a flyer, a banner or a menu, want to know whether it worked, or expect the link to change.

A tracked QR is also checked for the people who scan it. Because it sends them through an MJX link, MJX refuses tracked links to IP addresses, to other link shorteners and to app downloads, and anyone can report a harmful QR code. A plain QR never passes through MJX at all and depends only on your own link.

How to track QR code scans and change the link after printing

Tracked QR codes in MJX QR Generator are free, up to 10 per email address, and need only a one-time code sent to your email.

  1. Paste your link in MJX QR Generator and give the code a name you will recognise, such as the flyer it is going on.
  2. Choose to track scans and enter your email address. A 6-digit code is emailed to you.
  3. Enter the code. Your link becomes a tracked QR, listed under My QR codes.
  4. Download it as PNG or SVG and print it as you would any QR.
  5. To change the link after printing, open the QR in My QR codes and save a new link. Every copy already printed starts opening the new one, and nothing is reprinted.
  6. When an offer ends, pause the tracked QR, or delete it.

What QR code scan tracking shows you

For each tracked QR, MJX QR Generator shows total scans, scans in the last 7 days, a chart of the last 30 days, and the split by device and operating system. Link previews that apps make when a link is shared are not counted, so the number is people scanning, not apps fetching.

That is enough to answer the practical question. Print two flyers with two tracked QR codes — one for the shop counter, one handed out at the market — and the counts show which one people actually scanned.

It also takes care of a familiar printing mistake. A flyer printed with the wrong link, or an offer that has ended, is corrected by saving a new link rather than by reprinting.

A plain QR is a link printed once. A tracked QR is a link you can still count and change after the print run — and with MJX QR Generator, both are free.

Questions people ask

Is MJX QR Generator really free?

Yes. MJX QR Generator makes plain QR codes free with no sign-up, as many as you like, and tracked QR codes free too, up to 10 per email address.

What is a dynamic QR code?

A dynamic QR code holds a short link that can count scans and be pointed at a new address after printing. In MJX QR Generator it is called a tracked QR, and it is free after a one-time email code.

Can I change a QR code’s link after it is printed?

Only if it is a tracked QR. In MJX QR Generator, open it in My QR codes and save a new link, and every printed copy starts opening it. A plain QR holds the link itself and cannot be changed.

Do free QR codes from MJX expire?

A plain QR from MJX QR Generator keeps working as long as your link does, because it does not pass through MJX. A tracked QR keeps working until you pause or delete it.

Should I download the QR code as PNG or SVG?

SVG for anything printed, because it stays sharp at any size. PNG for screens and for sending on WhatsApp.

How long does MJX QR Generator keep scan details?

The detail of each scan of a tracked QR is kept for six months.
