What is a car parking QR sticker?

A car parking QR sticker is a QR code on the windscreen that lets anybody contact the vehicle’s owner by scanning it with a phone camera — when they are blocked in, when a car is parked across a gate, after an accident or in an emergency. What happens when someone scans the sticker

Say you come back to the parking lot and a car is standing across yours. You point your phone camera at the sticker on its windscreen, and a page opens showing the number plate part-masked, the owner’s first name and the vehicle type. From there you can call the owner or send a message.

Before a call connects, you are asked to confirm the last four digits of the number plate. It takes a moment when you are standing beside the vehicle, and it is the step that keeps the sticker from being farmed for spam. Spammers are also IP-blocked automatically.

On the owner’s side, the call or message arrives, up to three emergency contacts are alerted on the scan, and an email lands in the inbox. If the scan is about something worse than parking, the same page puts ambulance 108, police 100 and fire 101 one tap away.

How to set up a vehicle QR code sticker, step by step

Registering on VahanQR is free, and the QR code is ready the moment the vehicle is added.

1. Sign up on VahanQR with your mobile number.
2. Add your vehicle — car, bike, truck, bus or auto. Number plates in all-India RTO formats are accepted.

Is a car parking QR sticker safe? When your number is shown

It depends on the plan, and it is worth knowing exactly before you choose. On VahanQR’s free plan, a call is a direct call, so the person who scanned sees your number once they call you. The plate check still applies, but the number itself is not hidden.

On the Light privacy plan, calls are masked while you have call minutes: the caller reaches you without seeing your number. When the minutes run out, calls go direct again, as they do on the free plan.

On the Strict privacy plan, the number is always masked. Calls are masked every time and connect only while you have minutes, so your number does not reach the caller at all.

On every plan, a message does not show your number. If what you mostly want is for people to be able to tell you that you have blocked them in, a message already does that privately.

Most people who put one on are car and bike owners who park on the street or in a shared lot, and anybody who has been blocked in once and would rather it were easier next time — from either side.

Apartment complexes, gated communities, rental buildings and parking operators can register and get their own batch of QR codes carrying the society name, which they manage themselves. Fleets, taxis and dealerships can tag many vehicles the same way.
